PRSSA Roger Williams University 2008

This week Team 007 reported from the Viking Hotel in Newport, RI to report on new inductees into the Roger Williams University chapter of PRSSA. PRSSA is the Public Relations Student Society of America.

From the PRSSA website:

In 1968, 20 years after its own establishment, the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA) founded the Public Relations Student Society of America. The declared purpose of PRSSA is to cultivate a favorable and mutually advantageous relationship between students and professional public relations practitioners.

The student society aims to foster the following:

* Understanding of current theories and procedures of the profession
* Appreciation of the highest ethical ideals and principles
* Awareness of an appropriate professional attitude
* Appreciation of Associate Membership in PRSA and eventually accredited membership

Today The Public Relations Student Society of America has more than 9,600 members in 284 universities across the country.

Difficulties:
1. It was difficult getting any interviews. As you will see in our video we were only able to secure one on camera interview.
2. Getting the story right. I'm not sure our team ever really got the story we wanted to cover or whether or not we really just did three stories at once.

Reflections:
This is the last video for my New Media class at Roger Williams University. If you have been following and enjoying the blog I hope you've enjoyed it. I'm going to be continuing my journey into video editing and hope to have new material or news to share with you soon. Until then, "Good Morning, Good Afternoon, and Good Night."~The Truman Show

Democratic Primary Elections

This time, Team 007 decided to take a look at the Democratic Primary Election. We had interviews with the future Vice President of the College Democrats and the department head, Professor June Speakman.

Difficulties in this shoot:

1. Getting the right spot for some of the interviews. As previously found, Roger Williams University isn't the best place to shoot video due to the wind off the water. We tried our best and I have to say I thought the results were satisfactory.
2. Finding relevant B-roll. We spent so much time finding video of the presidential candidates that I believe it doubled the amount of time we spent editing the video.

Enjoy this look into the College Democrats and discussion on the Democratic Primary Elections:

Hilary Wehner Interview

This week, Team 007, interviewed Hilary Wehner. Hilary is a member of the RWU Pep Band, performs in the Sunday Mass, and wrote the new Roger Williams University fight song. She has been playing Clarinet for over twelve years and hopes to continue for many more.

Difficulties in this shoot:

1. The Lighting: I was shooting in the afternoon and had to find a good spot on campus to shoot the footage. I walked around looking for a room that was open with good sized windows so I could get natural light into the shot. I finally found where I wanted to shoot, in the New Academic Building on campus. As you will see in the video the light comes in lightly, but theres no other sounds and there's a solid color behind her.

2. Finding the person: Since we were late finding the person for this weeks shoot, I scurried and found someone through the music department. Luckily, I heard back from her before the deadline.

3. Using Two Cameras: I decided to use two cameras to increase my angles in the clip. I ended up only using the two angles in the performance and next time I do an Interview I will know that's all I really need them for.

4. Editing: This was a nightmare. I took the footage at over four minutes long and condensed it into a one minute and thirty second package. I first made separate videos of each of her performances, then I edited the interview down, then I synced the performance over her interview. Both the interview and the performance have motion techniques put into the shoot in post processing.

5. The lack of a team: I shouldn't wine about this because they both made an effort on Tuesday night to come down after their duties and supported this story. It was difficult planning the interview, writing the memo, shooting the interview with the client, and then editing the video. I would say that this whole process took about 8 to 10 hours this week. Its disappointing things couldn't of worked out better, so that I wouldn't have to carry the load. But, I'm sure both of them will make it up to me with next weeks package. I still think highly of both of them and we will continue to make excellent news.

Outlook:
Next week, Team 007 will have another exciting news package. So check back for more!

Seniors Advice to Freshmen

This past week, Team 007 put together a new news package. The package can be seen below. In this video, we questioned senior students at Roger Williams University and asked them what they wished they knew when they were freshmen. Some answers were funny and some were quite interesting.

Problems during shoot:

Our team ran into some problems at the beginning since we couldn't get very many women to appear in our video. We edited the video so that the two women who did give us some comments were split apart to create an allusion of more females in the shoot. Another problem we ran into was the wind. At Roger Williams University, we are located right next to the water and the wind is often fairly strong. It created some difficulties in our interviews and when you watch the clip you will hear some of the students being cut off.

The other problem we ran into while editing was how to probably do the transitions. We tried to make them as short as possible with still allowing the viewer catch the number on the screen. It could have been better but it suited its purpose.

What we learned:

Our team has to do a better job of blocking out the wind. Whether it be surrounding the microphone or using rubber around it, something has to be done. Also we thought it would be interesting if we did a unique closing, but it made our team look like amateurs. These are supposed to be professional news stories and this one was not up to par. Finally, we learned some techniques in this editing cycle that will hopefully help us with our next video.

If you want to view these videos on Youtube, search mcovill0511 or RWUdigitalmedia, the videos as well as blooper videos can be seen on Youtube.

In case you can't view the video these were the ten tips by the seniors:
1. Make good friends with the RA's.
2. How to sneak beers past the RA's.
3. Don't come to school with high school girlfriend.
4. "Don't be a fool, wrap your tool".
5. Get involved.
6. Spend less time napping.
7. Health services sells condoms six for a dollar.
8. ( Joke response )
9. Don't slack off and keep your grades up.
10. Be yourself.

Construction Chaos

Over the course of the last week, my team members and I had the honor of doing a news story about the on going campus construction. Speaking of my team members, our team is called "Team 007". This is very appropriate and given my incredible enjoyment in the James Bond series I was happy with this name. My team consists of myself, Joanna, and Ben. I believe most of the time I'll be doing video editing, but they've expressed interest and hopefully that can give editing an attempt.

We started our goal of creating our news story by declaring exactly what we wanted to cover. After we were cleared and ready to go, we started collecting B-roll for our shoot. Unlucky for us, both days of our shoot were plagued with rain and dark clouds, rendering most of our footage in a muddy afterglow.

When we first started shooting on Friday morning we were nervous about our plan of action since there was no construction going on. We took a few shots and actually two of them ended up in the final video. If you look closely at the road work ahead sign since near the end of the video, you can see my image reflected in the sign. I hadn't noticed that during the shoot, but once editing came I was almost just going to abandon the shot altogether. Friday's work concluded with some general script writing.

We made plans to get to campus early on Monday morning to catch the commute. When I arrived at 9:30, it wasn't as congested as I would've wanted, but as you can see in the final project we certainly made due. We got a majority of our major footage in the morning and the interview was conducted in the afternoon. We couldn't of cut it any closer to the deadline, as Team 007 was editing the script right up until 8pm, giving me an hour to piece together the story. I'm very happy with our results and I think this team will continue to produce high quality video news. Look for the Bloopers video on Youtube, if you'd like to see one of the interviews we had to cut out.

The video itself deals with construction on campus and the headaches students are facing as a result. The construction is for new sewer lines because of a new student dorm going up for the Fall of 2009. Also seen is clips of the ongoing work, an interview with Joesph Pangborn, and sketches of what the new dorm will look like at the end of the construction.

Anime Boston 2008

Over Easter weekend, I had the pleasure of attending Anime Boston 2008. According to the Anime Boston Webpage,

"Anime Boston is an annual three-day Japanese animation convention held in Boston, Massachusetts. Anime Boston 2008 will be held Friday, March 21st through Sunday, March 23rd at the Hynes Convention Center and Marriot Copley Boston.

Anime Boston 2008 will once again be presenting popular events which include a masquerade, an anime music video contest, video programming rooms, an artists' alley and art show, karaoke, game shows, video games, manga library, dances and balls, and much more... We'll also be hosting some special guests and industry representatives at Anime Boston."

Over the course of the weekend my friends and I went to many different industry panels, scouted out the dealer room, and watched several Anime Music Videos. There was over 14,000 people in attendance and sadly many lines as well. My friends and I even dressed up in costumes of our favorite characters on both days we went to the convention. While it was crazy with lines and a little unorganized, I'll probably still go back next year.

This is a video of all the action, also known as, the long lines that were present at Anime Boston 2008.

News Story

Two weeks ago, my classmates and I made a farce news story about a professor who was crushed by a soda machine. While I can't been seen in the video, I edited the piece together including the transitions. Included in the video are scenes of the accident, interviews with two students and the professor playing the role of a security officer. Enjoy the story.

Assignment: McKenzie Interview

Last Friday, I had the pleasure of interviewing Professor Brett McKenzie about his new Smart Car.

According to Howstuffworks.com: "With gas prices at historic highs in the United States and fuel-efficient cars in vogue, the time might be perfect for DaimlerChrysler to introduce the Smart Car to U.S. markets. Already popular in Europe, the Smart Car is small in stature but big on economy. The updated Smart Fortwo (named because it's "for two" people) is ready for release in 2008, so we could be seeing a lot more Smart Cars on the road in the near future."

Note: Since the first posting of that HowStuffWorks article, Smart Car is now solely owned by Mercedes.

Professor McKenzie recently purchases his Smart Car and has been the talk of the campus ever since. Below is my one on one interview with Brett McKenzie about his small vehicle that's been turning quite a few heads.

Interview

Recently, we were assigned to do a interview of someone we knew about various topics. I choose one of my roommates and quickly through together an interview on the future of Hi def media and most importantly Blu-Ray. With Blu-Ray officially winning the format war today, this can also be the first of many videos that show the HD DVD death kneel. Below is a quick segment of the interview. Check back later this week for the full segment.

Later this week did not happen. Actually it was finished today. Enjoy the final result.

Assignment 1: Show and Tell Completed

This is a video of my Mac Book Pro. After finally getting Final Cut to work in the Mac Lab, we started using it to fix our projects. After initial problems, I was able to get a handle on it and below is my first completed video. I believe that this is probably as final as it's going to get but I'd rather refer to this version as the only stable build because I believe there could be more work done to the footage. Enjoy.

Assignment 1: Show and Tell

Over the past weekend I was giving the task of filming something of value to me for a show and tell segment. It was difficult deciding what to do and how I could possibly keep anyone interested for even three minutes. I struggled taking the eight or so minutes I ended up recording. At first I kept getting nervous in front of the camera and forgetting what I was trying to emphasize during my video. I ended up shooting the video as a review for the Apple Mac Book Pro. I hope it comes out alright after editing because I've always been interested in reviews and this is my first chance to maybe show others what I know about technology. We were supposed to edit the video in class last Tuesday, but we ran into problems that will hopefully be resolved when we meet again on Thursday.

Below is a short segment of video I took for the assignment. Check it out.

Outside in the cold

Last Thursday we went outside as a class and started to work with the cameras. While most of the students were unprepared, including myself, we all seemed to get a feel for the camera. We found how far away someone has to stand in order the shot to be seen correctly. Also during some of the shoot it was kind of windy showing us that the microphone inside the Flip Video Ultra is very sensitive and to be wary of the wind when recording. All in all it was a quick introduction to shooting with the camera.
